Legend of The Flood
edition of István Komjáthy

It happened long, long ago. When birds were of gold, the grass of diamond, and the tinkling peach, the smiling apple and the speaking vine grew on silver branches of the golden trees of the wood. Good people, giants and humans lived together on the earth that time.

They lived a happy life, listening to the beauty song of the nice cuckoo, eating golden apple from the tree when getting hunger, making bows, digging traps and pitfalls, hunted, fowled, ran honey from the tree holes, tasting vine.

They lived a happy life until Golden Father didn't throw Ludvérc from the top of the Skyhigh tree to the seventyseveth depth. But, I tell you now also who this Lúdvérc is. Golden Father was young going easily about his wonderful empire. Once he spit into the water when walking by the boundless main he sees that a rock appears from the spitting following him. Than he cutted a withy, whisked the rock that immediatelly turned into Lúdvérc.

From that time on Lúdvérc was up to get Golden Father angry somehow, grudging his power, as Father created the earth below, where good people, giants and humans lived. He decided to create an own earth. So he asked the Father for dipperskin to slip into and dive to the bottom of the sea to take some ground along. He got what he asked also found ground on the bottom of the sea, took it into his mouth hiding it under his tongue and came up.

The Lord of the Upper World asked him if could find some ground. Ground was not found however sailed the seas, he told. The ground began growing in his mouth as a good bread as soon as he told this Also his whole head was grown, becoming like a barrel first, than as big as a house. He cried for help as soon as his head became even bigger. Golden Father began to laugh hearing his shout and seeing his chuffed head telling: "Lúdvérc, spit out the ground from the bottom of the sea!"

And see, giant mountains and rocks merged from the spitten ground. Than Golden Father threw Lúdvérc to the seventy seventh depth because of his lie commanding them to stay there and don't try to bother the humans, the people of the Golden Father. But Lúdvérc didn't obey. Came out and got close to the people speaking into their ears telling: "Don't make bows for yourselves arduously! Why do you keep your flocks? There are tinkling peaches more than enough. There are also apples and vines enough, just eat and drink, and have good time don't care of others."

The people of Golden Father didn't listen to the words of the fomenter. But also good people and giants heard this foxy encourage. They didn't care of anything from that time on, but eat, drank and had good time day in day out. Lúdvérc rubbed his hands knowing to be able to cause troble to the Golden Father knowing also that there will be a big trouble if the Lord of the Upper World got anger, and nobody knows what will happen!

Golden Father saw from the top of the Skyhigh tree that Lúdvérc came out from the seventy seventh depth. Also saw what that rotter made. He got terrible anger, the upper world ran high, thunderbolts ran through and through the sky. Father decided to punish Lúdvérc because of his outrage. He pulled up the water gate of the silver spring in the front of his palace to loose him, and made water on the earth for seven days and seven nights. Holes and abisses drank, teh seventy sevent depth was fulfilled first with the water of the silver spring, Lúdvérc jumpedout like flooded gopher from his hole.

Waters broke scummy from the holes on the seventh day.
The beautyful earth was suddenly over, water infested everything. The silkgrass field, the tinkling peach were gone, parklands were under water.

Golden Father sent his people to a high mountain and began to make a ship to save them. He made this ship secretly, to not to be known by anyone what he planned to do.
Even his household had no clue about where he goes. He left early in the morning and returned late home.

There was a mount in the diamond wood beihnd the palace, the mount of the world, inlayed with diamonds on each side, with yellow on the south, red on the north, white on the east and black on the west. The ship was made behind this mount.

He had wash in the water of life and death each morning getting power from it to be able to turn the waist thick trees easily put them together like thin sticks.
I don't know, how could it happen, but Lúdvérc became aware of this. Swarmed up to the Skyhigh tree on a silver ratlin and slinking into the palace of Golden Father as an old bagger. Than gave a beautiful coloured ribbon to a maidservant interrogating her secretly: "Do you know where your master goes?" "I don't know even if he leaves." she told. "The only thing I know is that the water of life and death should be prepared in a barrel for the evening as he has wash in it each morning."
Than Lúdvérc told to her: "You will got even more beautiful ribbon from me, if you hide the water from your master that he couldn't find it."

And gave three ribbons to the maidservant palm wide, blue ones. The girl obeyed hiding the water and Golden Father had to leave next morning unwashed.

He began the work as usual, but the pecking was heard even in the palace.
Lúdvérc was waiting for this moment escaping from the palace slipping from three to three following the sounds. He was within a bow shot from the mount, when Golder Father heard his steps and began to think how to outfox him. He took a look around and saw the big dew, suddenly had a wash in it.
A heavy fog descended not allowing to see anything, so Lúdvérc could not make a step further.
Lúdvérc stole back empty handed in the palace in shame. He found a trick out for the next day. He waved to the maidservant giving her three coloured ribbons again telling: "I made beer from barley and hop in this cup. Taste it with your master and see, he will feel good immediatelly. Than question him, where he walks, he willsurely tell it to you."

The girl made everything next day as agreed. Gave from the beer. Her master drank and got immediatelly. Laughed whooped being on the top of the world, even the summer became brighter on the lower earth. Than the maidservant asked: "Where you've been all day long, my master?" "I make a ship in the wood to my people to not to choke in the flood." he replied.

The girl would know only this and ran to the Lúdvérc telling him everything she heard.
Than Lúdvérc decided to make the work of the Father as hard as possible. He hided the shuck rope, stole the hatchet, hided the tommy in the bushes, digged them. But all his works were good for nothing. Golden Father prepared the ship to the end of the centenary. The water reached the higher mountains on the earth also the one where the humans settled.

The water almost swallowed them, when Golden Father descended the ship on an iron rope. As a giant bird set the mighty work on the water.

Humans shouted loud in joy and entered with their dogs and cats and mouses along. The ship was so big, that even a wild animals could enter in pairs after each kind.

Golden Father that his sons escaped and chased Lúdvérs to the earth. But Lúdvérc turned to snake suddenly swimming after the ship and hiding behind the ear of an elephant.

The water subsided finally and people got into dry land after a long wandering. Also Lúdvérc escaped to the shore spitting into his palms in his joy. A shockheaded dragon, the Kalamona sprung out from the spitting immediatelly, shouting: "Here am I, master, what would you me to do?" "Good to see you! Oppress the people!" ordered the Lúdvérc "Destroy and loot them, don't let them quiet. Let's revenge ourselves on Golden Father! Distress the people, destroy the people of the Father as we can!" "Kalamona oppresses us from that time on" finished Old Pusta the story. "Because I didn't tell you yet, that we are the nation of the golden Father, escaping from the flood on the ship. This is why dragon oppresses us, because we never lean to the word of the Lúdvérc. Now you know, what kind this Kalamona is. He has a magic power. We could overcome him only if someone could know the root of his power."

The sons looked on each other. Their hearts quivered. The eyes of Wing of Beauty Plain kindled and told: "I will know the root of his power even if I die." "Oh, you snipe!" Told one of his brothers "You wouldn't be enough for him!"

Old Pusta didn't listen to his sons continued as didn't hear them: "The flood destroyed everything, but there is a beauty corner of the world, where it is like it was before. But surely, I don't know where that corner is."

The last flame of the fire broke. The sons pulled their tressed doughes on themselves and slept on the grass under the tent of the stars.

Only Wing of Beauty Plains couldn't sleep. His mind ran on the tale of his father. His eyes were up to the birght of the stars. If midnight could read, could read this: "Oh, why am I this littel? Oh, if I could have wings as an eagly! I know, Kalamona would regret that very minute! I know! Than I would fly, until I find the beauty corner. Once I will have wings! Be aware Kalamona! I'll find you!"
